Get ready to learn how to prioritize your well-being amidst the chaos of motherhood and discover simple ways to recharge, rejuvenate, and find moments of calm in your hectic schedule. So, please grab a cup of tea (or coffee), cozy up, and dive into these essential self-care hacks together. You deserve it, mama!

Embrace the Power of Micro-Moments

Your girl’s got things to do and doesn’t have much time for self-care each day. So, I prioritize my self-care in short bursts; that way, I can still fit something in (no matter how small) to help me relax.

I’ve learned to appreciate and maximize these brief moments (also known as micro-moments) because, although they may seem insignificant, they are super important to giving me the relaxation and rejuvenation I deserve. Raising children is one tough job! You deserve a much-needed break — I promise.

So slip into your silk robe (or satin; mamas got to budget!), put on that sheet face mask, and let’s spill the tea. Not literally, though; no one wants more to clean!

  1. Enjoy your Morning, Cuppa: I am guilty of gulping down my morning cup of tea (coffee for some of you) as it seems like such a mindless morning task. Instead, take a few minutes to hold the warm mug in your hands and slowly sip your tea. Please pay attention to how it tastes, any aromas that may arise and how lovely it feels going down your throat. Doing so not only brings you to the present moment but also creates a tranquil moment of relaxation.
  2. Breathing Work: Take a few moments to close your eyes and focus on your breath. Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. This can help to release tension and bring a sense of calmness to your busy life. Try to focus on your breaths or a soothing visualization to add the element of micro-meditation into your daily routine.
  3. Short Stretch Exercises: Find a minute or two to stretch your body. Nothing too strenuous, stand up, reach your arms above your head and gently twist from side to side. Roll your neck counter-clockwise, then clockwise and shrug your shoulders ten times. These short moments should release muscle tension, improve circulation and give you some energy!

Find your Support System

They say “it takes a village to raise a child” for good reason. Finding a support system is vital for mamas as we are usually up to our necks in responsibility. Having people you can rely on who will empathize with the struggles of motherhood can make a world of difference in your mental wellness. Here are some ways to build your tribe and why it’s essential to have one:

  1. Friends or Family (Old or New!): Start by looking within your friend circle for other moms who can provide a safe space to share your joys, triumphs, concerns and frustration without judgment. The history you already have may provide a strong foundation for a listening ear and offering valuable advice. A parent, parent-in-law or other family members can be a great support system as well, especially if they have had children themselves. If you don’t have family members or friends with kids, you’re not out of luck! You can download the app Peanut, which I like to explain as Tinder for mamas. Another great way to find mom friends is to go to the park, a kids’ gym or anywhere that mamas bring their kids! Chances are other mamas are looking for mama friends, too!
  2. Importance of a Support System: Finding your support system as a mama is crucial to practical assistance such as picking up groceries, cleaning, cooking, gardening, or even running errands. It can also be a great way to exchange ideas between mamas going through similar stages in life. Sometimes, you need someone to hear or tell you you’re doing a great job. Having a network of other mamas, friends and family who understand the challenges of motherhood can provide opportunities for ourselves and our kids to socialize, foster personal growth and friendship and prioritize our mental and emotional well-being.

Prioritize Quality Sleep

I mean, does anyone know what sleep is? Does it exist outside the fairy tales we endlessly read our children? *cue dramatic eye-roll* guess who’s the expert on uninterrupted 8-hour sleep? That’s right, our dear husbands! *insert sarcastic eye-roll so intense it gets stuck* Can we all collectively roll our eyes in unison? Because, girl, I feel you! *join in for a synchronized eye-roll*

I know, I know, getting enough quality sleep feels like chasing a unicorn, but trust me, it’s crucial for our sanity and well-being. So, let’s embark on this sleep adventure together and uncover the secrets of peaceful slumber. Let’s unravel the mysteries of sleep, one eye-roll at a time!

  1. Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine that signals to your body that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Consistent bath time, relaxing massage, storytime, white noise and comfortable sleepwear…sound familiar? There is nothing wrong with creating a routine for the baby (and yourself). Remember, you need to take care of yourself to take care of your little one. Slip into your silk (or satin, mama’s got to save) pyjamas, put on a face mask and fluffy slippers and cozy into your favourite book before bedtime. Even if it’s only ten minutes daily, it can help you settle in for the night to prepare you to get as much sleep as your little one will let you have that night.
  2. Create a Calming Sleep Environment: Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary. Keep the room dark, quiet and at a comfortable temperature. Invest in a good quality pillow, mattress and bedding that makes you want to visit dreamland. Practise sleep hygiene by limiting blue light and avoiding caffeine or stimulating activities right before you fall asleep. Creating a calm and relaxing environment can help you get some quality sleep.
  3. Incorporate a Little Self-Care before bedtime to help you relax before you fall asleep. You can do relaxation exercises like deep breathing or gentle stretching, journaling your thoughts and emotions or even sipping on herbal tea! Try to look for activities that help to calm your mind and prepare your body for sleep. I like to meditate before bed because it gets me to focus on my breathing and let go of the millions of thoughts running through my head. It calms my body down and makes it easy to fall asleep. No wonder they say you shouldn’t meditate in your bed – almost guaranteed to put you to sleep!

Exercise for Physical and Mental Health

After taking care of the millions of things I seem to be responsible for (including taking care of my other kid, *ahem* I mean my husband), the last thing I feel like doing is working out. At this point, I don’t feel like moving. Let me sleep. But you know what? Every time I muster up the strength to do just one exercise…I feel great.

Exercise is not just about physical fitness; it is crucial in promoting physical and mental well-being. So I know this sounds crazy, but the thing that picks my butt off the couch is the idea that I’ll feel better after the exercise.

  1. Exercise and Physical Health: It improves our cardiovascular fitness and makes our muscles stronger, and it also enhances our endurance, making us feel like literal superheroes. Exercise is a powerful tool for weight management, too. It helps us burn calories, revs up our metabolism, and even helps us develop lean muscle mass. I mean, it’s like a win-win situation. And here’s the icing on the cake: regular physical activity strengthens our immune system.
  2. Exercise and Mental Health:  Our brains release endorphins during exercise, making it a natural stress and anxiety buster. If you’ve had a rough day, sweating can do wonders for your mood. Plus, regular physical activity has improved mental clarity and focus, making us sharp as a tack. And here’s the cherry on top: exercise can be a powerful tool in the battle against depression. It increases serotonin production, which is a happiness booster for our brains. Exercise also helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle, promotes relaxation, and reduces insomnia.
  3. Dedicated Time for Physical Activity: Set aside some dedicated time for physical activity and try your hardest to stick to it. Whether it’s early mornings, during nap times, or evenings, find a time slot that works best for you and make it something you genuinely look forward to. Even short bursts of 10 to 15 minutes can make a big difference. Whether walking, jogging, dancing, yoga, swimming, or joining a fitness class, find what lights your fire and make it a part of your routine. When genuinely enjoying the activity, we’re more likely to stick with it and create a sustainable, lifelong habit. Oh, and here’s a fantastic idea: involve the kiddos! Take walks or bike rides together, play active games, or turn your living room into a dance party zone. Not only will you bond with your little ones, but you’ll also set a positive example of an active lifestyle.
